A group of girl scouts in Livingston Parish are doing their part to help protect dogs at the parish animal control shelter. They raised money to buy the shelter three shade covers for the play yard.

"It will help them to where they don't get too hot, so they can still play around. They can exercise, and stay healthy," Madison Davis, Girl Scout, said.

The girls of Troop 30819 wanted to do something to help the shelter. So they called to see what was needed.

"We called the animal shelter to see what was going on. They said they needed shade, so we said okay," Jaydn Howes, Girl Scout said.

They went into the community and collected donations. They also dug into their own troop savings.

"We had some left over money from cookies and candy money, so we used some of that," Howes said.

In the end the girls raised $1,200.

"The dogs they have been really tired, because they've been digging holes into the dirt so they can cool down in the dirt. They've been panting a lot trying to hide under the chairs," Davis said.

Staff at the shelter told me the girls gift couldn't come at a better time.

"It's been really hot so you can't really leave them out there too long," Debbie DePhillips, with the Livingston Parish Animal Control Shelter, said. "Besides the shades it's the support. It's bringing people out. It's seeing the need of finding homes for the dogs. "

Now the girls want other kids to step up and try out volunteering.

"If they do it they will feel good about themselves. and they'd be knowing that they did a very good thing," Davis exclaimed.

The girls head back to the shelter Saturday to put up the new shades.
