A Baton Rouge animal shelter has beefed up its adoption rules to help protect black cats this Halloween.

Kimberly Sherlaw with the Companion Animal Alliance say sometimes people come into shelters wanting to adopt black cats to use as props for Halloween parties. She says there are also others who come looking for the all black felines to use in rituals of some kind or other. That's why the shelter has changed its rules for adopting a black cat for the next few days.

The cats are still available to adopt, but the new owners won't get to take them home until after the holiday.

"Black cats have some superstitious myths around them so we just want to make sure that all of our kitties that are here for adoption are going to safe responsible loving homes,” Kimberly Sherlaw, CCA, said.

Sherlaw says if you're in the market to get a cat, you should pick your new pet on personality not fur color.
