BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — Right now, people all over the country and right here at home are being sold for sex.Several Louisiana organizations are fighting to stop human trafficking.
Nearly 30 million people are victims of sex trafficking, and that's why people who work every day to prevent human trafficking need your help. I'm tracking this story and have information on how you can help.
Laura Domingue is an advocate, an entrepreneur, and above all a mom. She's dedicated her life to make a change.
"As a mom, I would say gut wrenching," Laura said. "I heard about human trafficking and found out it was happening here in our community, and as a mom of five kids, raising my children here in Baton Rouge, that was just not okay with me."
Laura has four boys and a little girl, and she could never imagine that happening to her.
"I went home and looked at my little girl and thought 'This is someone's daughter. These are not numbers, these are precious girls, and I look at my own daughter, and I need to really realize that I want my daughter to be safe, but what about all these other girls.'"
Now, years later, Laura's the founder of Trafficking Hope, where she goes out into the community because she said the key to fighting this battle is you.
"We know we can't do this alone. We value you so many partnerships we've made over the years," Laura said.
Here in Baton Rouge it happens more than you probably realize. Just Wednesday BRPD arrested two women for selling a 16-year-old for sex.
"I really wanted to see what we could do to make the community safer for my children," Laura said.
As a grandmother, Janice Durnin feels the same.
"Children have so many things that they deal with now and so many influences. Yeah, I am really concerned," Janice said.
"If it's a dangerous situation, you need to call law enforcement. You need to report it," Laura said.
