HOUMA, La (WVLA) -- Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s detectives arrested Katherine Celestine, 60, on today, Wednesday, Oct. 8 for a money scam that involved multiple victims.

Sheriff Vernon Bourgeois says they received a tip about the woman who was pulling off a possible scam. Yesterday the Houma Daily Courier ran an article about the woman, and the Sheriff’s department was contacted by several other people who felt they were victims of her scam, too.

Detectives received calls from two local churches and five additional companies who all gave the suspect money after she told the sad story about her great grandchild needing a medical device. She said she didn’t have the money to pay for the machine and said she would repay the individuals as soon as her husband returned from work.

Today around 11 a.m., Houma Police detectives were contacted by a local business owner who gave the suspect money, but he got her cell phone number. The business owner then called the suspect’s phone and arranged a meeting at the Leonard Chabert Medical Center.

Celestine admitted to scamming nine businesses out of money for a total of over $3,800. She used the money to play video poker, and lost it all in the process.

Celestine is currently on probation after being booked at the Terrebonne Parish Jail.
