BATON ROUGE, La (NBC33) - Fifth graders at Kenilworth Charter School had a competition to see who was the best "Mathlete" on March 12.

The school hosted a math contest that had over 200 participants from 50 different schools in East Baton Rouge parish.

Youngsters demonstrated their knowledge of algebraic reasoning, geometry, numeric patterns, measurements, data analysis and probability.

Prizes included iPods, laptops, and bicycles.

Eric Giles, a Math teacher at Kenilworth, stated the prizes were great, but that the kids just wanted to prove themselves.

"They're excited to showcase this. They work hard in the classroom every single day and now they get to show what they know; Not just among their classmates and their school, but the best of the best," stated Giles. "And that just makes them want to try harder. They're excited to see, am I really one of the top math students in the Baton Rouge area?"
