NBC NATIONAL NEWS — 2012 is on track to be the worst year ever for West Nile disease in the U.S.
The number of cases is now up to 1,093, which is 25 percent more than last year.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says the number of cases reported so far this year is the highest they've seen by this week in previous years.
So far, 87 people have died from the illness spread by mosquitoes.
Nearly half of the cases have been in Texas, but Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Oklahoma and South Dakota have also seen high numbers.
There is some evidence that the illness has peaked. However, experts predict the numbers will continue to increase well into October.
