NBC NATIONAL NEWS — While many parents think injuries are "part of the game" of youth sports, most say they don't know how long their child should stay on the sidelines.
A new survey by Safe Kids finds one third of American children suffer an injury that requires medical treatment while playing team sports.
A majority of parents didn't realize kids need two to three months, or an entire season, to recover from that injury.
Coaches who participated in the survey say they have felt pressure to play an injured child, especially if they were the star of the team.
Half of coaches said there was an "acceptable" amount of head contact allowed during play. But, many also said they wish they had more sports safety training.
Experts with Safe Kids say parents should be aware of how much training their child's coach has had, and coaches should take advantage of online training resources.
