Activists raise awareness about HIV and AIDS
December 1st is "World AIDS Day" - a time to raise awareness about a disease that has killed half a million people in the United States since it was first discovered in the 1980s.
HIV and AIDS plaque our community. Baton Rouge has the second highest AIDS rate in the nation per capita. New Orleans ranks third. But HIV is now a treatable disease that is not a death sentence. Still, the stigma surrounding the disease keeps some people at risk from getting tested.
