Three children died in a mobile home fire early this morning.

Houma firefighters arrived around 2:30 a.m. to the mobile home in the 100 block of Whispering Oaks Drive.

The mobile home was engulfed in flames. Firefighters extinguished the flames and found the bodies of the victims.

According to the State Fire Marshal’s Office, the victims were two males and one female, ages 11, 12, and 13-years-old.

The victims traveled from to Alabama to Houma, to celebrate the holidays with their relatives, who owned the mobile home.

Nine other people were in the mobile home at the time, but were able to escape alive. All survivors were transported to a local hospital.

But seven survivors, including the parents of the deceased children, had to be transferred to Baton Rouge General Hospital to receive treatment for moderate to severe injuries.

The victim’s parents noticed the fire when smoke began to enter their bedroom. The father was able to escape with one child through the front door. He could not return back to the mobile home because the fire had become too dangerous.

The mother and another child were forced to escape through the bedroom window. The remaining family members, sleeping at the other end of the trailer, were able to exit through a back door.

Investigators say the fire started in the combined living room/kitchen, where four children had been sleeping. The survivors reported that space heaters and candles were in use at the time of the fire. The State Fire Marshal’s Office is working with Terrebonne Parish authorities to determine the exact cause of the fire.

There were no working smoke alarms in the home at the time of the fire
