A  news station helicopter crashed Tuesday morning near the Space Needle in Seattle, killing two people and critically injuring another, the Seattle Fire Department said in a tweet.

Firefighters and police were responding, and the street contained at least two damaged cars.

The crash appeared to be on Broad Street, near the city landmark, police said.

The helicopter crashed around 7:45 a.m. Monday morning at the space needle, and smoke and fire could be seen coming from the scene.

KOMO 4 News in Seattle confirmed that a news helicopter used in joint partnership between KOMO 4 News and KING 5 News crashed on Broad Street near the Space Needle.

The 37-year-old man who was taken to a hospital after Tuesday morning's helicopter crash in Seattle had been in a red car that apparently was struck by the aircraft, Seattle Fire Department spokesman Kyle Moore said.

He got out of the car by himself, and he had burns to more than 50 percent of his body, Moore said. He was taken to Harborview Medical Center with life-theatening injuries.
