Two people are dead after their vehicle ran off the road Tuesday morning in St. James Parish.

According to Louisiana State Police, 48-year-old Mathew P. Daigle of Lutcher and 54-year-old Terri R. Deslatte of Hester, both died as a result of the crash.

Police say the accident happened around 1:30 a.m. on US Highway 62 south of I-10.

Daigle was driving a Porsche southbound on US Hwy 61. For unknown reasons, Daigle’s car ran off the left side of the roadway, crossed the center median, and crossed over the northbound lanes of travel.

After crossing the northbound lanes of travel the vehicle left the roadway and went into a bayou south of Blind River.

First responders found the car submerged in the water several hours later.

Driver impairment is unknown at this time, and a toxicology sample was taken from Daigle and submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis.

Investigators consider speeding to be a factor in this crash.
