No New Jaguar at Southern

BATON ROUGE (WVLA) - Students at Southern University say a new live mascot isn't a top priority.

The jaguar cage on campus has been empty since the last big cat died 6 years ago.

Since then - over $300,000 has been raised for upkeep should a new animal ever move in.

Earlier this month - students voted 300 to 60 to use the money for other projects on campus.

The money will go toward health initiatives - and repainting the Harding Boulevard overpass.

Demetrius Sumter, the President of the Student Government Association says the school is in a money crunch - and students need to figure out what's important on campus.

Half of the money has been set aside for other SGA President's to use for whatever they see fit.
