Louisiana black bear population growing

Louisiana's black bear population is growing. There are now 300 black bears in a northeast Louisiana refuge. That number comes from a statewide count.
A state biologist looked at analysis from 2006 to 2008. The study is the first of several that will decide whether the Louisiana black bear is still considered a threatened animal.
About 50 sows and 100 cubs were moved from that refuge to other parts of the state to build up the population.
