BATON ROUGE, LA (WVLA) Tonight at Polk Elementary, a meeting was held with the school board to discuss possible school closures.

Concerned parents and teachers came together tonight to discuss the possible closure of Polk Elementary.

Polk is only operating with 197 students, that means the school's only operating a little over 51 percent capacity.

With such a low percentage, the state is actually losing money to keep the school open, but the members of the school board said they have no intention of closing the school without finding ways to keep it open.

At Polk there are on average 19 students in each classroom. Having a small setting allows the teacher to provide more individualzed education to the students. When is the school system going to do whats important for the children, and not its bottom line. How can you close a school which had an 11.1 jump in their school perfomance score. With that kind of jump something positive must be going on inside the walls of the school.

I work at Polk and I can tell you that the 51% capacity figure is misleading. Mr. Dilworth states that the school has a capacity of 383. thats 15 classrooms x 25 students in each room = 375. Whats he's not saying is that there are 5 classrooms that cannot be filled to capacity because of certain regulations that cap their numbers. That's a computer lab, 2 special Ed., 2 pre-k classes. The acutal capacity is 10 classrooms x 25 students = 250 capacity. That's 80% of the capacity not 51%.
