Officials in New Jersey claim a possible levee breach in northern New Jersey has flooded out three towns prompting the evacuation of hundreds from their homes.

Local reports say the towns of Moonachie, Little Ferry and Carlstadt are under water after the Hackensack River broke its bank in the wake of Hurricane Sandy. Some 2,000 residents may be affected. No word if there have been any deaths or injuries.

Reuters reports rescue teams using boats and trucks to move residents out of the danger zone to a nearby school and a small airport. The breach reportedly happened hours after Sandy slammed into New Jersey Monday night. The superstorm dropped below hurricane status before hitting the East Coast.
