Two years ago, on September 1, 2008, Hurricane Gustav reached the Louisiana's coast. Thirty four parishes were declared a disaster area and around 1.5 million people were left without power.
In total, an estimated 153 deaths have been attributed to the storm in the U.S. and Caribbean. Forty-eight of those were in Louisiana. Five were due to falling trees, which caused the majority of damage in the Baton Rouge area.
Today we pause to remember the effect this storm had on our area.
After it was said and done - countless in the city had to rebuild their homes.
Douglas Stafford was no different. A tree fell on the place he's called home for over 10 years.
It took him a year to rebuild. Stafford says he learned a lot from Gustav - and will make sure he's in a safe place for the next storm.
