NBC NATIONAL NEWS — "Damaged" doesn't even begin to describe the full-screen destruction in "The Dark Knight Rises." This final chapter in Christopher Nolan's Batman saga features a new villain who brings the Caped Crusader and Gotham residents to their knees. But after eight years of soul-searching and an encounter with Anne Hathaway in a cat-suit, Christian Bale decides he's ready to make the ultimate sacrifice to save his city.
Meryl Streep puts on her relationship hard hat in "Hope Springs." She and Tommy Lee Jones share a house, a marriage, but not much else in this middle-age romance. So she decides to take their relationship to the next level: therapy. Steve Carell provides the couch and insight, while Jones provides the quips and resistance.
You can get a double dose of Jennifer Garner this week. She plays a hopeful mom who creates a real child out of paper wishes in "The Odd Life of Timothy Green." She's a bit more conniving in the world of "Butter," where she's determined to restore her family's glory as champion butter carvers. But will she melt under competition from her husband's mistress?
A bayou girl is cut off from the world in "Beasts of the Southern Wild." Quvenzhane Wallis makes her screen debut in this indie film. Young "Hushpuppy" is free to follow the wiles of her imagination, until a catastrophic storm leaves her in charge of her sick father and sinking home.
Also out this week, season three of the HBO comedy series "Eastbound and Down."
