NEW ROADS, LA (NBC33) — King cake, mardi gras beads, and freezing rain?? "It's awesome and cold," said Darielle Patin when asked about the festivities.
Winter weather didn't rain on this Mardi Gras parade in New Roads.
"Yeah it's cold and we want to have a fun time and enjoy ourselves," said mother and grandmother, Mary Hilliard. "We're able to get close."
After waiting all year for the celebration, a few interstate road closures were no match for Mary's family. They traveled approximately 40 miles.
"We're from Baton Rouge. We've been trying to get here to new roads since 7 o'clock this morning, we were trying to go the other way--the new way--to try to come across the new bridge but it was closed."
New Roads held two parades on Fat Tuesday and these party goers weren't about to go home empty handed. When asked what they will grab at the parade, children responded, "candy, teddy bears, everything!" Patin added, "I'm going to catch beads and candy, some tootsie rolls, some now and laters and i'm going to catch a football and a giant toothbrush."
And despite the heavy coats, hats, and umbrellas, folks we talked to say "to see the kids have fun, it's worth it." About ten children crowded around our cameras and gave a resounding, "Happy Mardi Gras!"
