LSU Opera opens its spring season with Benjamin Britten’s The Turn of the Screw March 21 through March 24 in the Claude L. Shaver Theatre at LSU.

This operatic version of Henry James’ famed ghost story promises to delight audiences both musically and visually. Celebrating the 100th birthday of Benjamin Britten, the LSU production offers an intricate, professionally built set design and costumes designed by a costume manager for the Metropolitan Opera in New York.

“Turn of the Screw was selected to celebrate the centenary of Benjamin Britten’s birth, and showcase LSU’s fine singers in this incredibly difficult piece,” according to Michael Borowitz, who will conduct the production and lead the LSU Symphony Orchestra.

This opera is characterized by intricate music and taut, tension-filled scenes that draw to the climactic end, Borowitz said. Jonathan Knipscher, a costume supervisor for the Metropolitan Opera and freelance costume designer based in New York, will design the costumes for Turn of the Screw. An intricate set design will be created by New Orleans Opera Association and features

“The Turn of the Screw is conceived after the actual musical structure of the opera itself, said Dugg McDonough, artistic director of LSU Opera. “Britten and librettist, Myfanwy Piper, conceived their version of Henry James' famous ghost story as a theme and variations. The set design for the LSU production consists of a flexible stage area fashioned like a large, tilted disc with multiple levels, combined with a scaffolding structure representing the tower in the opera's libretto. As the opera unfolds, the tower associated with the character or ghost of Peter Quint will constantly shift, as pieces or sections of the set disc become rearranged or removed from view.”

LSU Opera continues its season with Impressions de Pelléas, which will be performed April 19 at 7:30 p.m. and April 21 at 3:00 p.m.

Tickets for The Turn of the Screw are $30 for general seating, $20 for LSU faculty, staff and seniors and $15 for students. Tickets can be purchased online at or through the LSU Union Box Office at 225-578-5128. Shows on March 21-23 begin at 7:30 p.m. and on March 24 at 3 p.m.
