ENTERTAINMENT NEWS (CNN) — "Iron Man 3" won't open in the U.S. until Friday, but it's already a hit overseas.
The third film in the "Iron Man" series raked in $195.3 million after opening in 79 percent of foreign markets over the weekend.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, that sizable opening was history-making for Disney and Marvel Studios, which put together the film on $200 million.
"Iron Man 3's" dominance also surpassed that of 2012's "The Avengers," as Joss Whedon's superhero ensemble project earned $185.1 million internationally when it opened last year. As a result, some are curious if the new "Iron Man" movie could eventually surpass "The Avengers" $1.5 billion global haul.
Yet according to star Gwyneth Paltrow, who returns to the movie along with Robert Downey Jr. (Tony Stark/Iron Man) and Don Cheadle (James Rhodes/War Machine), this could be the three-quel's last opportunity to rake in the cash.
"They've sort of said this is the end for Iron Man," Paltrow told CNN earlier this month. "So yeah, I think it probably is."
Cheadle's less certain, however, as he pointed out that big box office could always change the best-laid plans.
"Until this movie comes out and performs or doesn't perform, I think it's going to be a lot of seeing how people react and also what's left to do," Cheadle told CNN. "Is there anything left to mine in the relationships between these characters? Is there some place to go that isn't going to get covered in one of these other Marvel movies? If so, then he could return."
