The cities of Zachary and Central are facing off to raise money and canned food for the Zachary Food Pantry.

Starting in the morning on Friday, Nov. 16, the two cities will go head-to-head to see which city collects the most food. This event will help pack the pantry just in time for the holidays.

There will also be a gumbo sale in the city of Zachary's parking lot for $5 with all proceeds will going towards the drive.

Mayor Amrhein of Zachary and Mayor Watts of Central give us a look at why this pantry challenge is so important.

“It’s a fun deal a fun challenge, collecting food for our food bank and of course this time of year it’s a very needed very worthwhile project,” Mayor Watts said.

"The response has been tremendous,” Mayor Amphein added. “We already have between $20-25 thousand in donations. Right now we hope to get 20-25 thousand cans the schools have bought into this. The whole community has, and every business we went to see, they have said what do you need what do you want."

The challenge will begin 6:00 a.m. and will last until Saturday at 12:00 p.m..

We'll have a live look at the kick off for this event tomorrow morning on NBC33 News Morning Edition beginning at 5:00 a.m.
