ENTERTAINMENT NEWS (CNN) — NBC's new series "Hannibal" just nabbed an "X" factor.
Actress Gillian Anderson, beloved for her role as Agent Scully on "The X Files," has signed on to portray the therapist of psychiatrist Dr. Hannibal Lecter over a series of episodes, reports Entertainment Weekly.
Written and produced by Bryan Fuller, "Hannibal" has been described as a contemporary dramatic thriller that pulls from Thomas Harris' book, "Red Dragon."
"The Hunt's" Mads Mikkelsen has been cast as Dr. Lecter, and his budding bond with an FBI agent named Will Graham (Hugh Dancy) is at the heart of the series.
Fuller describes Anderson's casting as a surefire win.
"Every therapist needs their own head examined and we are ecstatic that Gillian Anderson has chosen 'Hannibal' to mark her return to American television after 10 years to portray Dr. Lecter's personal psychiatrist," he said in a statement to EW. "Her intelligence and sophistication, not to mention her pedigree of ground-breaking TV, makes her the perfect actress to match wits and psychological manipulations with one of the greatest villains in pop culture."
