BP oil spill recovery: Fear of pollutants make the taste of Louisiana safer

Since the BP oil spill back in April of 2010, seafood from the Gulf of Mexico has gone under the microscope. Although concerns still linger about the heart of Louisiana cuisine, is it a realistic fear?

“This is what we eat. This is our cuisine; the shrimp, the crabmeat, the oysters, Dustin Loveless, General Manager of Mike Anderson’s restaurant in Baton Rouge, said. “It’s actually safer to eat now just because of the heightened awareness of the tests that are going into it.”

Those tests are made possible by almost $20 million in spill damage money funded by BP, and they are still happening today in three different places. All the results of those tests have been posted to GulfSource.org for everyone to see. The site includes the test date, where it was tested, and the levels of questionable chemicals found in that sample.

“A lot of work goes into getting the meal from the stove over to your plate - since the spill,” Loveless explained. “Over 2100 pieces of seafood have been tested, and none of it has been what the federal government calls very concerning. It’s pretty hard to find anything that's not safe that comes out of these waters these days.”

As for the tests, Loveless said the spill is responsible for finding out just how safe the seafood is.
