GONZALES (WVLA)--Ascension College shut its doors over the weekend after school officials were told they would no longer be eligible for federal student aid.

Dozens of students met on campus today to protest the school's decision to close.

Some students say they recieved a letter about the closure over the weekend, but many say they didn't know until they saw the sign on the door Monday morning.

In an e-mail to NBC33, school officials said the college has incurred huge student tuition debts that it can't afford.

The proprietary school trained students in business, medical and dental programs.

There were 137 students enrolled.

The Louisiana Board of Regents is meeting with the students and 12 other proprietary schools on Friday, August 6th, 2010.

The meeting will be downtown in the Claiborne Building in the Louisiana Purchase room at 10am.
