The U.S. Supreme Court hands down the historic Amistad decision. The case stemmed from the seizure of the Schooner Amistad by Africans who had been abducted. A U.S. brig retook the ship, but a federal court ruled that the Africans had been unlawfully enslaved, and therefore any legal claims to them as property were not legitimate. The U.S. Supreme Court affirmed this finding. It became a movie in 1996.
