By Stone Grissom

On this day in 2003, a granite monument of the Ten Commandments was wheeled from the rotunda of the Alabama Supreme Court building in Montgomery. The monument became a point of controversy when Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice Ray Moore was sued for placing the monument in a state government building.  The judge defied a federal court order to remove the monument, which ultimately led to his removal from the state supreme court.
