August 14, 1935 - FDR Signs Social Security Act

On this day in 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act into law, creating unemployment insurance and pension plans for the elderly. The Social Security Act was a component of Roosevelt's "New Deal" program. By dollars paid, the U.S. Social Security system remains the largest in the world.
