On this day in 1977, 24-year-old postal employee David Berkowitz was arrested and charged with the "Son of Sam" serial killings that occurred in New York City. Berkowitz eventually withdrew an insanity defense and pleaded guilty to six murders. He was given six 25-years-to-life sentences for his crimes and has been held at the Sullivan Correctional Facility in upstate New York since 1987.
