On this day in 1776, the official copy of the Declaration of Independence was signed by the delegates to the Continental Congress. The first printing of the Declaration of Independence was produced the night of July 4, 1776 and delivered to the Congress on July 5. The document declared that the Thirteen Colonies were independent of Great Britain and explained the justifications for separation from the British crown.
