BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — The Varsity Theatre continues to step up its game with its latest show announcement. The alternative rock band Bush is set to perform in October.
“It made sense with the tour and it was a no brainer for the market,” Alex Bowen, Talent Buyer for Varsity Theatre, explained when asked how he landed the show. “We’re just trying to continue to elevate the Baton Rouge market.”
Bush formed in London back in 1992 and quickly rose to fame in 1994 with the release of its debut album “Sixteen Stone.” That album was certified multi-platinum and made the band one of the most commercially successful rock bands of the 90s.
In 2002, Bush disbanded and the members all separated to work on various projects. Lead vocalist Gavin Rossdale formed a new band, Institute. That project never reached the heights of Bush.
Eight years after calling a quits, Bush reunited and began touring again.
Armed with a new album, “The Sound of Winter,” Bush continues to push forward with its familiar fan base as well as a new generation of listeners.
“I think the record has that balance of living: the struggle, romance, loss, desire, aspirations,” Rossdale said about the new album in the band’s official biography. “Like the song ‘All Night Doctors,’ I enjoyed writing a dialogue, showing a snapshot of someone else’s life.
“For most people, happiness revolves around what they’ve achieved. But success is really about how they reconcile their aspirations with where they actually land in life,” he continued. “That balance has always intrigued me. I’ve found that depression, stress and worry is almost always rooted in the past and the future. But there’s a lot of riches to be found in the moment.”
In the years since reuniting, Bush has primarily focused on arena tours. Landing a show at the Varsity Theatre, which has a capacity of less than 1,000, is a huge win for the venue.
“An act that size coming to the Varsity is going to get a lot of attention,” Bowen noted. “I think it’s a really cool time to live here in Baton Rouge for young professionals.”
Bowen took over the task of booking shows at the Varsity roughly 10 days ago. Before starting his official first day his first show, The Flaming Lips, sold out in 30 minutes.
“I imagine the Flaming Lips scenario [when the Bush tickets go on sale,” Bowen said. “I think they’re going to move quick.”
Bush will perform at the Varsity on October 5. Tickets to the show go on sale on Friday, June 22 beginning at 11:00 a.m. They can be purchased online or at The Chimes located on Highland Road.
