Google SkyMaps A / SkyView: Have you ever looked at the stars in the night sky and found yourself asking “Is that Ursa Major or Ursa Minor?” Now with a few swipes on your Apple or Android phone you can have the entire galaxy at your fingertips.
Whether you are an astronomer or just a weekend stargazer, the Google Sky Maps app features an overlay of the visible constellations, along with the names of stars and planets.
Just open the app, point your phone towards the night sky, and watch as the stars and planets visible appear on your mobile device.
These apps overlay galaxy photos captured from the Hubble telescope with text matching the names of the astrological bodies. More planets are visible by the naked eye than you may think. Keep in mind when observing, stars constantly twinkle whereas planets remain solid.
SkyMaps is available for free on the Android Market but a similar app called SkyView is available for the iPhone OS for only $1.99.
