The Louisiana Field Office of the Corps of Engineers' Vicksburg District opened the Riverton Recreation area beach on May 20 for the summer months.

The 13-acre recreation area, which is open year-round, is located north of Riverton, Louisiana, on the Ouachita River. The beach area of the recreation area normally operates from mid-May until mid-September. Riverton Beach is the only beach under the Louisiana Field Office and on the Ouachita-Black River system. Picnic sites, a picnic shelter, playground, boat ramp, and restroom buildings are also available.

The Vicksburg District's Louisiana Field Office provides day-use activities and some camping at two river systems and three lakes, with an annual attendance of over 1,338,566. These are the Ouachita-Black Rivers, the Red River, Bayou Bodcau, Caddo Lake, and Wallace Lake.

The USACE is the nation's largest federal provider of outdoor recreation, managing more than 400 lake and river projects in 43 states and hosting more than 370 million visits per year. With 90 percent of these recreation areas within 50 miles of metropolitan areas they provide a diverse range of outdoor activities close to home and to people of all ages.
