BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — After more than a decade a popular downtown night club is making its last call.
“It has been a great 12+ years. I have made some wonderful friends and forged some incredible (if sometimes hazy) memories. But, it is time for me to move on.”
That was part of the official statement issued today by owner Frank McMains when announcing that Red Star Bar will shut down on Wednesday, Sept. 19. The place opened back in 2000 at a time when business in the area was slow. Now that the area is thriving, the offers to purchase the building are stacking up.
“Honestly, there have been a couple of different people who have expressed interest in making an offer,” he said. “And now that it’s public knowledge that the building is for sale, there have been several more people who are interested in taking over the business. It’s impossible to say what will happen.”
Although the future of the building and the business are in limbo, McMains is firm in his resolve for how he plans to move forward.
“I’ve been shooting [photographs] and writing [articles] for 5 or 6 years now, and I’ve had a very successful run doing commercial photography, he explained. “It’s been, essentially, my career for a number of years, and I look forward to pursuing it with a greater level of zeal.”
On Friday, Sept. 14, Red Star will host its official farewell party.
“I think that it’s going to be a lot of fun,” he said. “I have a feeling like that last Wednesday night, which will be a Karaoke night, is going to be pretty special, too.”
Earlier today McMains addressed the loyal customers who have fled to the dimly-lit corner-spot.
“You are all a wonderful group of people and my life is richer for having had the privilege of knowing each of you. I am proud to have hosted some of my favorite bands within the brick walls of Red Star. I have met people at Red Star who have left a permanent and priceless mark on my life that I will never forget and it has been the warm center of so many friendships, collaborations and shared joys that they almost seem beyond number. For over a decade, Red Star has been one of the defining elements in my life and for all of it, I am profoundly grateful. Being a part of Red Star has been an always-surprising adventure for which I will be forever thankful and forever unable to fully repay.”
