Roughly 700 lbs of rice and 1,000 lbs of meat are currently simmering in pots at the ExxonMobile Refinery. No, it’s not some weird experiment for alternative fuel – it’s part of the annual Jambalaya Cook-Off to benefit the Capital Area United Way.

Roughly 54 cooking teams will serve up their best batch of jambalaya tomorrow, Friday, Aug. 24, to judges. They’re competing with the hopes of being named top chef! Judges include chefs, restaurant owners and other friends, as well as NBC33’s Chief Meteorologist Jesse Gunkel!

Along with raising fund and eating some great food, the event serves as a fundraising effort. Last year’s event raised a total of $1.5 million for the Capital Area United Way. The donations represented nearly 15 percent of the non-profit organization’s fundraising campaign for the year.

Now in its 23rd year, the Jambalaya Cook-Off is a way for current and former employees to reconnect and spend some time with family. Guest speakers include retired BRPD police chief Jeff LeDuff and Mayor Kip Holden.
