“Get Your Rear in Gear’s goal is to help raise awareness of colon cancer by honoring survivors, remembering those that we’ve lost, and magnifying the importance of the ‘dreaded’ colonoscopy as the single most important cancer fighting tool in our arsenal against colon cancer,” explains Dr. Kelly Finan, colorectal surgeon at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center and Woman’s Hospital.
Colon cancer is one of the most curable and preventable cancers today, yet it’s the second leading cause of cancer death in the U.S. “We need to raise awareness of the symptoms, the importance of recommended colonoscopies, and encourage prevention measures,” says Finan. She warns that, “Louisianans are at an increased risk of colon cancer due to our diet and obesity rates; too many good southern dishes are impacting more than just our waistlines.”
