New downtown restaurant offers unique tapas menu

A familiar name is serving up a new way to eat in downtown Baton Rouge. Zolia Bistro opened its doors this week inside City Plaza on Fourth Street.

The same owners that brought DeAngelo’s are taking on a new challenge. The Italian bistro begins the day with a quick and casual breakfast and lunch dinner menu, but then takes on a whole new direction for dinner.

Taking a cue from the Spanish, Zolia features a tapas menu at night.

“One person could come in and order a couple of small plates to go with maybe one glass of wine, maybe try a taste of another wine with another dish,” Mathew Anderson, General Manager for Zolia, explained. “But it’s more of just trying different things instead of having one plate that’s just the one dish.”

In Spanish, Tapas means “small plates,” and is a traditional way of dining. By taking on the unique style of dining, Zolia hopes to tap into the new crowd of young professionals who occupy downtown in the evening. It’s a concept that gained positive reviews when it was first displayed back in September at the Pop Up Restaurant in Perkins Rowe.
