NEW ORLEANS, LA (WDSU) — After sitting idle for more than eight years, a Canal Street theater is nearly set for its grand re-opening. The finishing touches were put on the Joy Theater Monday, Dec. 19 as the business planned to soon reopen.
The Joy Theater reopened with state of the art sound and lighting systems, a built in stage and bars. The 10,000-square foot theater will host live music and theater productions as well as private events.
Irma Thomas will breathe life into the facility with its first show on Dec. 29. Upcoming events also include a New Year's Eve concert and party.
The Joy's legacy dates to 1947, when it began operation as the city's hot spot for film. Amenities included a "crying room" -- where parents could take a young child to watch a movie without disturbing the general audience -- and a state-of-the-art projector and sound system.
They Joy Theater was shuttered for the last eight years.
