Bruce Springsteen will return to New Orleans for his first Jazz Fest appearance since 2006, festival organizers announced on Tuesday.

Springsteen will perform with his legendary E Street Band, closing out the first weekend of music at the Fair Grounds Race Track with a performance on April 29.

Officials also announced the addition of Eddie Vetter to the 2012 lineup. Vedder will perform on May 3.

Springsteen's only other Jazz Fest appearance was in 2006 with his Seeger Sessions project on the heels of Hurricane Katrina. Critics cited that show as one of the most powerful performances in the festival's history.

"For anyone who was there that April day in 2006, for Bruce's ministering to the people at the festival, that performance will forever remain a life-catharsis," said Quint Davis, who produces the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. "When moved by the sheer force of his spirit and artistry, we experienced a rare moment in time when the healing power in music was taken to an ultimate level."

Vedder joined his bandmates, Pearl Jam, at the 2010 Jazz Fest in a performance that was broadcast directly to the United States military in Iraq and featured a poignant discussion between Vedder and his friend serving the country thousands of miles away. Vedder will appear as a solo artist at this year’s Festival.

Previously announced artists appearing at Jazz Fest including the Eagles, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Foo Fighters and the Beach Boys.
