UPDATE: Lacey McRight says she earned $300 in tips last night, all to be donated to a local charity. She tells us that is nearly three times as much as what she normally earns on a Tuesday night at work.

ORIGINAL STORY: One local bartender is giving up her tips tonight as a way of giving back to the community.

Lacey McRight has a full time day job, but when night falls, she can be found behind the bar at The Spanish Moon on Highland Road. Several months ago she learned about a group of bartenders like herself who were pooling their coveted tip money and giving it away.

“Every month they donate to a different charity,” McRight explained. “This month it’s the Louisiana Lions Club’s summer camp program for disabled children. They provide summer camps for kids with disabilities and it’s free for their families.”

This is just one of the many charity organizations that’s felt the benefit of what’s call The Barman’s Fund. The loosely-organized group started a couple years back in New York. It has since spread to the south and has a strong group based out of New Orleans lead by Holly Williams.

McRight, however, is the first bartender in Baton Rouge to join the cause.

“Because I have a day job, the money I make bartending is my supplemental income,” McRight said when asked why she decided to get involved. “So I asked myself, ‘do I really need that new pair of shoes?’

“I started to think about and realized that I could do something good with the extra money I make,” she added. “That extra $100 to $200 a month that I will be losing could go to something better.”

Tonight, McRight, along with other bartenders in south Louisiana, will go to work just like any other night and they will serve up the usual drinks. However, by the night’s end they will provide much needed help for at least one local non-profit group.

Doors for The Spanish Moon open at 9:00 p.m. There is no cover charge.
