American Thrift Media to hold free holiday event at Radio Bar
BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — Entertainment in Baton Rouge can often feel like a battle between the young and the young at heart, especially when it comes to live music performances. One local production group hopes to change that by offering an alternative.
“We found that there are a number of folks in town who may not want to go out to a show that starts at 10:30 at night,” Barrett Black, one of three who consist of American Thrift, explained. “We start our shows earlier than the usual for those people who still want to go out and have fun after work, but may have kids or have to be up early for work in the morning.”
American Thrift was founded in February 2011 by Black, John Tulley, and Jeff Roedel. After a year of putting on engaging live music performances at alternative venues around town, the group decided to put together an end of the year celebration at the newly opened Government Street venue, The Radio Bar.
“We’ve spent the last year putting together a compilation CD from people who have played at our shows,” Black said. “The first 25 people who come to the show and who like us on Facebook will get this CD.”
The free event where you can get the free CD will be held on Saturday, Dec. 17 and is being billed as a Christmas social. The night’s entertainment will include a DJ set by the Generationals, an indie pop band that’s based out of New Orleans.
With the Radio Bar, their thing is that you can go in and vote for songs that you like with your phone. They also have a DJ booth set up, but they really haven’t been using it much. So, we thought it would be interesting to use that for this event,” Black described.
Also making a special appearance that night will be the owners of Atomic Pop Shop, a new vintage store that features a vinyl collection. The location opened up off of Government Street.
“They’re brining this rolling record cart,” Black said. “It’s like a food truck, but with music. They’re going to be selling some vinyl from their shop.”
But unlike their typical events, this show will get started at 10:00 p.m.
