The new LSU Performing Arts Academy kicks off its first full year with a free Open House, August 27 from 10am to 4pm. The event is open to the public, rain or shine. The event will feature free live performances, open workshops and demonstrations, guided tours, and an “instrument petting zoo”.
The Performing Arts Academy, begun in January of this year, represents an expanded effort by LSU to connect with the local community. “Louisiana has such a rich cultural and artistic heritage,” says Academy Director Blake Wilson, “and it would be a mistake not to help build that next generation of great musicians and performers. We can do that by making sure that people from all walks of life have access to excellent arts training.”
In addition to offering private music lessons, the Performing Arts Academy expands its line-up this Fall to include early childhood programs such as Music Together and programs for senior adults like the LSU New Horizons Band, a band for adults looking to learn a new instrument. The PAA is also branching out to offer classes in acting, film & digital media, such as Final Cut Pro, in response to the growing local film industry in Louisiana. Visitors will be able to sample each of these classes and more at the Open House on August 27th. To that Wilson adds, “It’s a great opportunity for folks to come kick the tires and try us out.”
