"I don't want to say segregation. In a way it's not equal. It definitely won't be separate but equal," says Brandy Spears.

Brandy Spears has three kids in the East Baton Rouge School System. She's outraged about State Senator Bodi White's plan to start the Southeast Baton Rouge School District.

"I think it's sad because school board money was used to put the new schools that are there and they're going to be taking tax money away from the system that's already struggling," says Spears.

Schools in the neighborhoods of Westminster, Inniswold, Woodland Ridge, White Oak, Shenandoah, Woodlawn, Santa Maria and Old Jefferson would make up the district. Ty Lovvern is a recent Woodlawn High grad.

"It could be a move in the right direction,"  says Lovvern.

He feels the educational system in the area is underperforming and something needs to change.

"I think it's average now. I think it could be better," says Lovvern.

But Spears says starting a new school district isn't the way to achieve that goal.

'I think it's going to hurt the school district overall...'cause those are your newer schools. Your newer schools have more technology, have better facilities and you're going to take that away from, like I said, from a school district that's already struggling," says Spears.

The East Baton Rouge Parish School System got a "D" in the state's latest educational rankings.
