Early voting ends Saturday, and one Parish is already making a statement at the polls. Four times as many registered voters cast their ballot in Pointe Coupee Parish than the average state-wide.

As of Friday, 1,300 voters have already cast their ballot early or absentee. Voters here are proving that size has nothing to do with the power of public opinion.

One race getting a lot of attention is Mayor of New Roads. Tommy Nelson is running for re-election despite being indicted for racketeering and public bribery in Operation Blighted Officials. Mayor Nelson is accused of accepting cash and gifts for his support of Cifer 5,000, a bogus garbage cleaning company.

Mayor Nelson pleaded innocent in Federal court on July 20th. If convicted, he faces 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. Five other candidates are challenging Nelson in the race for New Roads Mayor.

Early voting ends Saturday at 6:00pm. The regular election is October 2nd.
