A Texas man died this morning in a crash on I-10 near Sulphur. A second driver from Mississippi was taken to the hospital with moderate injuries.

The Louisiana State Police report that the crash happened on Monday, Nov. 26 shortly before 10:00 a.m. The preliminary investigation revealed a 1999 Jeep driven by Varghese K. Paily, 52, of Port Arthur, Texas was traveling east on Interstate 10 when Paily switched from the middle lane to the outside lane to pass an 18-wheeler. Paily lost control of the Jeep he was driving and the vehicle began to rotate. The driver’s side of the Jeep impacted the rear of a 2001 Ford pick-up truck that was parked on the right shoulder, driven by Richard D. Schneider, 63, of Waveland, Mississippi.

Both men were transported to a nearby hospital. Paily was pronounced dead at the hospital from his injuries. Schneider suffered moderate injuries. Both men were wearing a seat belt.

Impairment is not suspected at this time. Routine toxicology samples were obtained from the drivers and will be submitted for analysis. The crash remains under investigation.

It was raining at the time of the crash. Excessive speed for the weather conditions is suspected to be a factor in the crash.

Louisiana state law requires motorists to consider a variety of factors while driving including the condition of the weather and to drive at a reasonable and prudent speed. Troopers would like to remind motorists that the posted speed limit is often too fast for areas of poor visibility and/or slippery roadway conditions. Motorists are encouraged to reduce their speed whenever they encounter inclement weather such as rain or fog and to use low beam headlights to improve their visibility for other drivers.

Troop D has investigated 26 fatal crashes so far in 2012, resulting in 31 fatalities.
