BATON ROUGE (WVLA) --A woman says, she's lucky to be alive tonight after a gang of pitbulls broke into her backyard and killed her dog.

It happened just after 7:00 this morning on River Road.

Diamond Ryan says, she was feeding her dog "Zeus" when she suddenly found herself surrounded by three pitbulls.

"The dogs come in the yard, my dog tries to come forward to protect me, the second one shoots out, the third one shoots out, they pile up on my dog," said Ryan.

Ryan ran inside to call police while the dogs attacked "Zeus."

Officers had to use shot guns to break up the fight.

Animal control officers eventually got control of the dogs.

They're now in custody waiting on an investigation.

"There's a pretty good chance based on what these animals did to the dog, that we will declare the animal dangerous," said EBR Animal Control Director Hilton Cole.

The pitbulls' owner was charged for no license and registration on the dogs.

NBC33 crews knocked on his door, but he didn't answer.

As for "Zeus," the injuries were so severe he had to be put down.

"They just killed my dog right before my eyes," said Ryan.
