Almost anybody you ask in the 70805 area code will agree that violent crime is a major problem.

"There's a lot of shooting every day right now," Thaddeus Scurtail, a 70805 resident explained.

So it's no surprise that police and the district attorney's office are working to curb that with the newly launched BRAVE program. Just a few weeks in though officials say it's still too early to tell if the program is working yet.

"We're starting to see some impact there, making some progress. but you know it's going to be the long term. Not something in the short term, so you know it's hard to tell," Hillar Moore, District Attorney, said.

Though officials are taking it slow, police in the area already feel they're laying the necessary ground work.

"They're making a little progress, the officers in the 70805, as far as getting to know the residents, identifying the problem areas, the problem individuals. They have made a number of arrests based on citizen complaints," Lt. Don Kelly with BRPD said.

"You have to take baby steps, and you have to start real slow, and we're heeding that advice right now. And that's why we're not just running out there and trying to react right now. We’re going to take our time and make sure we do it correctly," Moore said.

For those living in the 70805 the hope is that the program will finally provide the relief from crime they need.

"I pray it do help, because we do need help, because we is afraid, we is tired of being afraid," Thaddeus Scurtail, a resident of the 70805, told us.
