BATON ROUGE, LA — Greater BR Food Bank CEO Mike Manning came on BR Laginappe to explain that they are currently holding a food drive due to a shortage in supply.
Manning says that their recent National Mail Carrier Food Drive held on May 12, 2012 raised 50,000 lb's of food. Manning shared that when childen are in school, they are able to eat in the school's programs but when summertime comes and school is out, there is a greater demand for food for these children.
Manning notes that they are short 21 million meals in taking care of the need for food, and that is is not just a need for children, but for the elderly, who, for example, may need to choose between buying medicine or buying food.
The GBR Food Bank is continuing their Food Drive in the grocery stores where people can help out by dropping food items in the red barrels.
Non-perishable items such as peanut butter and canned meats are welcome, and that people can also help out by donating money. One dollar given will provide 7 meals.
