Dr. White said that references can be critical and offered these keys to ace the request for references during the interview process:

1) Select 3-5 references  
2) Tell about someone who knows your capabilities
3) Get their approval
4) Give important specific information which includes the name, title of the person, their firm , phone number
5) Prepare your reference  

Dr. White said that references are usually the last step in the screening process before an employer extends the job offer. What a reference says or doesn't say, can many times make the difference between getting that offer or not .
