Cpl. L'Jean McNeely with the BR Police Dept. came on Baton Rouge Lagniappe to give tips on how to protect your home while away on vacation. McNeely said that it is a good idea to call the Post Office to get them to stop delivering your mail while your'e gone or have a trusted neighbor or relative come and pick up your mail. Also, it is a good idea to leave a key with with a trusted neighbor so that they can get in if they need to or just go by and make sure that the doors and windows are secure. McNeely also offered that automatic timers and lights are good crime deterrants as well as putting security system signs in the yard and window - whether you have service or not- to deter criminals from entering while you're gone. McNeely also advised viewers to keep lawns and hedges trimmed- especially around windows as burglars typically like to hide there and enter the house where it is not easily visible that there was entry there if obstructed by bushes. A final pont McNeely offered was not to leave a key outside in normal places like under the flowerpot or doormat, but if necessary, to choose an unlikely place outside that someone wouldn't normally look.
