Gulf seafood cause for safety concern?

BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — Marylee Orr, Executive Director with the Louisiana Environmental Action Network (LEAN) joined the NBC33 set for taping of "Baton Rouge Lagniappe." Her organization notes that there are some serious concerns coming from the Gulf in regards to the quality of seafood post BP oil spill.
Orr says that fishermen have shown seafood with signs of deformity, which includes lesions on fish, shrimp without eyes, and shrimp with tumors and mutations.
Orr explained that fishermen in these areas are concerned about feeding this food to their families and out on the market and that they report that they have never seen anything like this in all of their years of fishing.
Orr continues to say that fishermen are also concerned about losing their culture and way of life. As to whether or not these findings are directly related to the BR Oil spill, they are sill gathering information. She says that LEAN's early test findings after the BR Spill revealed high levels of petroleum hydrocarbon and other toxins in the seafood.
Furthermore, other scientists closer to the place of the spill found higher levels of oil in the gills of seafood.
As to whether it is safe to eat Gulf seafood, Orr says that she is personally cautious about where she gets her seafood to eat .She notes that the FDA advises people eat only 5 shrimp a week and that pregnant women and small children should be careful. She further said that, in her opinion, the BP event was not just a spill, but a "hemmorhage"- as 200 million gallons of oil and 200 gallons of dispersant were in our Gulf and that she is concerned that we've actually altered the Gulf. She concludes that we're still finding oil coming up from the bottom.
